Thyme is an evergreen herb used for culinary and medicinal purposes. The most common species is common thyme. Thyme is a member of the genus Thymus of the family Lamiaceae, and is related to common marjoram of the genus Marjoram. Thyme is described as being low-growing, about 6–12 inches tall, with small, green leaves that are fragrant, and have a woody, thin stems. There are more than fifty varieties that vary in fragrance (scent) and flavor.
